Law firms & bar associations
They know the law.
Help them do the work.
Your new associates arrive knowing law. They still need practice in lawyering. Give them a client to interview, a file to work through, and a chance to revise.
Use the same materials schools use.
The Legal Practicum gives you free matters, exercises, and an assessment and feedback form. Use them with first- and second-year associates or a bar association’s new-lawyer program. Your trainers choose the work and guide the discussion.
Twenty matters connect doctrine to practice. New lawyers can practice interviewing, research, writing, counseling, negotiation, and litigation. They can also work on files, fees, time, and the business of a law practice. Choose the skills your lawyers need next.
The book explains the method. The curriculum supplies modules, case files, and rubrics. The platform supports simulated interviews and assessment and feedback between live sessions. Evolving technology gives learners more chances to practice. Your trainers teach judgment and decide what each lawyer has demonstrated.
Start with one matter.
Pick a matter that fits your practice or program. Choose an exercise and a trainer. Have each lawyer prepare, perform, and reflect on the work. Use the feedback form to discuss what worked and what to try next.
You might start with a client interview. Ask the lawyer to prepare questions, conduct the interview, and explain what they still need to learn. Review the work together. Then repeat the exercise with a clearer plan.
For a bar association, use one matter as the common file for a new-lawyer group. Participants can compare their choices and learn from the trainer’s feedback. You can adapt the exercises for programs offered nationally.
Questions you may ask
Do we abandon the training we already do well?
Of course not. Keep it and build on it. Add an exercise where practice and feedback would help your lawyers.
Do we have to build a whole program first?
No. Try one matter. Use what you learn from that session to choose the next exercise.
Can we adapt the materials?
